Passport (6+ months validity), driving licence, vehicle registration / rental agreement, road tax and insurance covering Brunei. Rental drivers need a signed cross-border authorisation letter.
Submit Brunei's online arrival/entry registration before departure and save the confirmation offline. Verify current rules on Brunei Immigration's official website — requirements are updated periodically.
Malaysian motor policies do not automatically cover Brunei. Ask your insurer (or your rental provider) for a Brunei extension and carry the cover note.
Around 35 km north of Miri city. Clear Malaysian immigration and customs, then drive the short neutral zone to the Brunei side at Kuala Belait.
Present passports and vehicle papers, complete the vehicle entry formalities and keep every stamped slip — you will need it on the way home.
Kuala Belait → Seria → Tutong → Bandar Seri Begawan. Note checkpoint operating hours and allow buffer time on weekends and public holidays.

Only if the rental company gives written cross-border permission and extends the vehicle insurance to Brunei. Most Miri rentals are not allowed across the border by default — always ask before you book. GO MIRI arranges Brunei-approved vehicles on request.
Miri to the Sungai Tujuh checkpoint is roughly 35 km (about 40 minutes). Continuing to Kuala Belait takes around an hour in total, and Bandar Seri Begawan is normally a 3 to 4 hour drive from Miri including the two border checkpoints and the Tutong stretch.
Brunei operates an electronic entry/arrival registration for travellers. Complete it before you travel and keep the confirmation on your phone. Requirements change, so check Brunei Immigration's official site right before your trip.
Passport valid at least six months, your driving licence, the vehicle registration or rental agreement with cross-border authorisation, valid road tax, and insurance covering Brunei. Rental customers should also carry the rental company's authorisation letter.
Foreign-registered vehicles pay the unsubsidised (higher) rate in Brunei and are subject to purchase restrictions. Fill up in Miri before you leave and treat Brunei fuel as a top-up only.
